Teddy Bear Amigurumi

A classic round-bellied teddy bear worked in the round. About 15 cm tall when finished — perfect as a gift or nursery decoration.

3–4 hours Beginner 6.8k downloads

This little teddy bear is worked entirely in single crochet in the round — no seams, no complicated stitches. The body, head, arms, legs, and ears are each worked separately and then assembled with a yarn needle. Safety eyes give him a sweet expression, and a simple embroidered nose and mouth finish the face. He's about 15 cm tall and uses less than 100g of yarn.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

    Make the body

Start with a magic ring. Round 1: 6 sc into the ring. Round 2: inc in every stitch — 12 sc. Round 3: *sc, inc* repeat — 18 sc. Round 4: *sc, sc, inc* repeat — 24 sc. Rounds 5–10: sc in every stitch — 24 sc. Round 11: *sc, sc, dec* repeat — 18 sc. Stuff firmly with toy stuffing. Round 12: *sc, dec* repeat — 12 sc. Round 13: dec all the way around — 6 sc. Fasten off, leaving a long tail to close the hole.

  2. 2

    Make the head

Magic ring. Round 1: 6 sc. Round 2: inc all — 12. Round 3: *sc, inc* — 18. Round 4: *sc, sc, inc* — 24. Round 5: *sc, sc, sc, inc* — 30. Rounds 6–10: sc all — 30. Insert safety eyes between rounds 7 and 8, about 6 stitches apart. Round 11: *sc, sc, sc, dec* — 24. Round 12: *sc, sc, dec* — 18. Stuff firmly. Round 13: *sc, dec* — 12. Round 14: dec all — 6. Close and fasten off.

  3. 3

Make the ears, arms, and legs

Ears (make 2): MR, 6 sc, inc all — 12 sc. Sl st to close, fasten off leaving a sewing tail. Arms (make 2): MR, 6 sc, inc all — 12 sc. Rounds 3–7: sc all. Stuff lightly. Dec all — 6 sc. Fasten off. Legs (make 2): MR, 6 sc, inc all — 12 sc. Rounds 3–8: sc all. Stuff firmly. Dec all — 6 sc. Fasten off, leaving sewing tails on all pieces.

  4. 4

    Embroider the face

Using a yarn needle and a length of dark brown or black yarn, embroider a small triangle for the nose between and just below the safety eyes. Add two short straight stitches below the nose for the mouth — a simple upside-down Y shape. Keep the stitches small and tight so they don't snag.

  5. 5

    Assemble the bear

Pin all pieces in place before sewing to check the positioning. Sew the head to the top of the body using the long tail and a yarn needle, stitching through both layers all the way around. Sew the ears to the top of the head, the arms to the sides of the body at round 4, and the legs to the bottom of the body. Weave in all ends securely.

⚠️

Common Beginner Mistake to Avoid

Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round — amigurumi is worked in a continuous spiral, not joined rounds, so it's very easy to lose your place. Move the marker up at the start of each round.

Frequently Asked Questions

What hook size should I use?+

Use a 3mm or 3.5mm hook with DK weight yarn. A smaller hook than the yarn label suggests creates a tighter fabric so the stuffing doesn't show through the stitches.

Are safety eyes safe for babies?+

Safety eyes are not suitable for children under 3 — they can be pulled out and become a choking hazard. For a baby gift, embroider the eyes in satin stitch instead.

My bear is lumpy. How do I get a smooth finish?+

Stuff gradually as you go rather than all at once at the end. Use small pieces of stuffing and push them into the corners with a pencil or chopstick. Overstuffing causes lumps; aim for firm but not stretched.

Can I make him bigger?+

Yes — use chunky yarn with a 5mm hook. The proportions stay the same; the bear will be about 25 cm tall. You'll need roughly 3× the yarn.
