This Easter bunny is worked in single crochet in the round, just like the teddy bear pattern, but with the addition of long floppy ears that give him his signature look. He's worked in white or cream yarn with a pink inner ear and a fluffy pompom tail. At about 18 cm tall, he fits perfectly in an Easter basket or sits sweetly on a shelf.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

    Make the body and head

Body: MR, 6 sc, inc all (12), *sc, inc* (18), *sc sc inc* (24). Rounds 5–12: sc all. *sc sc dec* (18). Stuff. *sc dec* (12). Dec all (6). Close. Head: MR, 6 sc, inc all (12), *sc inc* (18), *sc sc inc* (24), *sc sc sc inc* (30). Rounds 6–11: sc all. Insert safety eyes between rounds 8–9, 7 stitches apart. *sc sc sc dec* (24), *sc sc dec* (18). Stuff firmly. *sc dec* (12). Dec all (6). Close.

  2. 2

Make the long ears (make 2)

Outer ear (white): Chain 4. Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc, 3 sc in last ch, sc back along other side, sc, sl st to first sc. Round 2: sc all around, 3 sc in tip. Rounds 3–8: sc all. Fasten off. Inner ear (pink): Chain 3. Work the same as outer ear but only 5 rounds. Sew the pink inner ear to the white outer ear with a yarn needle, leaving the base open.

  3. 3

    Make the arms and legs

Arms (make 2): MR, 6 sc, inc all (12). Rounds 3–7: sc all. Stuff lightly. Dec all (6). Fasten off. Legs (make 2): MR, 6 sc, inc all (12), *sc inc* (18). Rounds 4–9: sc all. Stuff firmly. *sc dec* (12). Dec all (6). Fasten off, leaving sewing tails on all pieces.

  4. 4

    Make the pompom tail

Wrap yarn around two fingers about 40 times. Slide off your fingers, tie tightly in the middle with a separate length of yarn, and cut the loops. Fluff out into a ball and trim to a neat sphere about 3 cm across. Leave the tying tails long for sewing onto the bunny.

  5. 5

    Assemble the bunny

Sew the head to the body. Sew the ears to the top of the head, slightly angled outward. Sew the arms to the sides of the body at round 5, and the legs to the bottom. Sew the pompom tail to the back of the body. Embroider a small pink triangle nose and a Y-shaped mouth. Weave in all ends.

⚠️

Common Beginner Mistake to Avoid

The ears are the trickiest part — they need to be stiff enough to stand up slightly before flopping. If they're too floppy, insert a small piece of pipe cleaner into each ear before sewing them on. Bend the pipe cleaner to the angle you want.

Frequently Asked Questions

What colours work well for this bunny?+

Classic white or cream is most popular, but grey, brown, and even pastel pink or blue make sweet bunnies. Use a contrasting colour for the inner ear — pale pink on white, or cream on grey.

Can I make a smaller version?+

Yes — use fingering weight yarn with a 2mm hook for a tiny 8 cm bunny. These make lovely Easter egg decorations or keyrings.

How do I make the pompom tail perfectly round?+

Wrap the yarn more times for a fuller pompom, and trim gradually — a little at a time, rotating the pompom as you go. It's much easier to trim more off than to add it back.

Is this pattern suitable as a baby gift?+

Use embroidered eyes instead of safety eyes for babies under 3. Make sure all parts are sewn on very securely — pull-test every limb and ear before gifting.
